Crochet Earflap Tassel Hats (Teen and Adult sizes)

Both hats follow the same pattern.  The difference in size is achieved by using different size hooks.

UK terminology given first, US terminology given in brackets.

Size    Adult fits 20” – 23” head circumference   Teen fits 17” – 20” head circumference

Hook size – for adult hat use 5mm, for teen hat use 4.5mm

Yarn – I used King Cole Big Value Cotton Look Glitter DK, 1 x 100g ball is enough for 1 hat.  You can use Aran (worsted) weight yarn instead, but please check your tension (gauge) to ensure you get the right sized hat.

Tension (gauge)Adult size – 12 stitches to 4”     Teen size – 14 stitches to 4”

Earflaps

Skip 6 stitches from where you fastened off and rejoin yarn.  Work in rows, decreasing 1 stitch at the beginning of every row as follows:

Row 1.  2ch (counts as 1 stitch), skip 1 stitch, 1 tr (dc) into each of next 12 stitches.  Turn.  13 stitches.

Row 2.  2ch, skip 1 stitch, 1 tr (dc) into each stitch to end.  Turn.  12 sttches

Repeat row 2, 4 times (6 rows altogether).  8 stitches.

Now decrease at beginning and end of each row as follows:

Row 7.  2 ch, skip 1 stitch, work 1 tr (dc) into each of next 4 stitches, skip 1 stitch, 1 tr (dc) in last stitch.  Turn.  6 stitches.

Row 8.  2 ch, skip 1 stitch, work 1 tr (dc) into each of next 2 stitches, skip 1 stitch, 1 tr (dc) in last stitch.  Turn.  4 stitches.

Row 9.  2 ch, skip 2 stitches, tr (dc) in last stitch.  Fasten off.

Skip 15 stitches from the last stitch of the first row of earflap.  Rejoin yarn and make 2nd earflap in the same manner.

Tassels

Cut 18 x 36” lengths of yarn and divide into 2 groups of 9.  Fold one bunch of 9 in half and push the folded end through the bottom space of the earflap.  Pull the two ends, each of 9 strands, through the folded loop and pull up neatly, keeping the two ends the same length.  Braid these 18 strands gently and tie an overhand knot near the end to stop the braid unravelling.

Complete the second earflap tassel in the same way.
